Elizabeth C. Sheffler b Oct 1846
Elizabeth married Henry W. Pope, an immigrant from Germany who arrived in 1872.
There's something a little funny about this one. In 1880 they are not married, and in 1900 show as married, since 1890, first marriage for both. So far so good. At this point Elizabeth is 54 years old, Henry about 44. She has had one child, one still living. But living with them is a 25-year-old "daughter" Hattie Pope, and a 5-year old "adopted son" Albert Pope. Hattie - Single - lists as having one child, one living.
Then in 1910 Hattie is nowhere to be found, and Elizabeth shows as having had 2 children, 1 still living. With them is "son" Albert, now 14. Elizabeth says she is 60 although she is actually about 64.
A lot of "perhapses" present themselves. It looks as if Henry and Elizabeth had a daughter Hattie long before they married, and then Hattie as a single woman had a son Albert, whom Henry and Elizabeth "adopted" as a son. And then Hattie died. This is the most straighforward scenario.
Another option is that Hattie is a daughter of Henry from a previous relationship, and that the rest follows like above. A third, seemingly absurd option, is that Elizabeth really had a son at the age of 49 in 1895. In any sense he is listed as Henry and Elizabeth's son in 1900 and 1910.
Albert Pope registered for the draft in 1917 and listed his address as the same place he was raised, 120 Poplar Street. He is single, and in 1919 there is a Westmoreland County marriage record for Albert W. Pope and Glenna P. Tarr. They show up together with no children in the 1920 census next door to Henry and Elizabeth. I find none of them at all in 1930.
